“Sake &Shochu: Japan from North to SouthTasting with Emily Pickett” 

For its second year in a row, sake sommelier Emily Pickett is back by popular demand to give the low-down on sake! This year will feature a fresh list of products and additionally, include a couple shochu samples as well. Hosted at Kyo Kitchen & Bar, join us for an education-packed evening complete with sampler food pairing from Ashley MacKinnon and lots of time for questions. The tasting this year will be focusing on the individuality of Japan's regional uniqueness in terms of sake and food culture. A brief overview of sake productions, categories and styles, as well as serving etiquette will also be covered this session.

Personal Bio: Emily Pickett is the restaurant manager and sake sommelier of Kyo Kitchen & Bar in Halifax, NS. In 2020 Emily graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science in psychology, to say the least running a restaurant wasn’t the natural trajectory. Serving through school was always an exhilarating experience but it wasn’t until opening Kyo that Emily found her passion for hospitality. Emily quickly climbed the hospitality ladder from serving, to bartending, bar managing and settling into restaurant managing with her compacted wisdom. Over this duration, her interest for wine, spirits and most notably, sake grew. Emily completed her WSET Level 3 in Sake in 2020 and has since completed her Certified Sake Sommelier program in 2022. Her current focus is to bring more attention and understanding to the relatively unknown spirit, Sake, to Atlantic Canada. The goal is to grow Kyo’s sake portfolio to reflect the restaurant approachable and quality-focused values. Emily graduated from the CAPSAC program in June 2023. In her spare time, you can expect to find Emily outdoors skiing, trail running, surfing and hiking.
